In the month of October, the North Allegheny Intermediate Key Club took on one of its biggest projects yet. In celebration of breast cancer awareness month, and determined to fight the disease, our club teamed up with an elementary school class to raise money for breast cancer.
Our key club was first approached with the idea by Mrs. Perkey’s 2nd grade class at McKnight Elementary School. The class had set a goal to “Pink our Pathways” and raise money for breast cancer, but they needed help to achieve it. We teamed up with them and fundraised for tulip bulbs that would bloom pink for breast cancer. We sold them for a dollar each, and decided that when we accumulated them, we would plant them at the joint entrance between their school and ours.
The first step was raising the money to buy the tulips. We printed, distributed, and e-mailed hundreds of flyers to anyone we thought would be interested in supporting us. The teachers also held a “jeans day,” where they would donate to the fund and get to wear jeans to school. After a few weeks of fundraising, our next step was to buy the tulip bulbs. We bought 1,000 tulip bulbs and arranged a date with the second grade class to plant them after school. Our whole club was excited to meet and help the kids.
Together, on October 26, we lined the entrance to our schools with tulip bulbs that will bloom into beautiful pink tulips. But more importantly, we worked together to donate $1400 to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Working with the 2nd grade class was a wonderful experience. This project was proof that no matter who you are, or even what age you are, you can truly make a difference by working together.
