Each year, our Key Club hosts a haunted house. In previous years we have always donated the money to UNICEF. This year, we felt like we have always donated to the same charities and wanted to do something different. We decided to donate the money to aid in the building of a memorial at the sight were many Americans lost their lives protecting others, in Summerset, County.
This year the other officers and I, along with two club members that offered to take over plans, thought that we were going to have to cancel our plans of the haunted house. We were given the news that we were not going to be able to use the building that we used for the previous 3 years. We were running out of time and options when we finally found a local business that offered to allow us to use their attic. The only stipulation was that we had to clean out all of the old junk, and to keep everything intact. We only had 2 weeks to clean everything and then get everything set up. Several members of our club stepped up to the task. We held several work nights to hang up the “walls” and to set up the other decorations. We were able to make this year’s haunted house, one of the best non-professional ones in the area, not only because of our awesome decorations but because our members really acted the part of their respective characters. We wanted to keep the price of admission relatively low, so that most members of the community would be able to attend. We charged three dollars per person if they came in costume and four dollars without. The haunted house was open for three nights and we managed to make $500 for the memorial.
